Genealogy by the States – Week 39 – North Dakota

Sunday, September 29, 2013 Posted by

This week’s blogging prompt is the State of North Dakota. Blog about an ancestor or your families connection to North Dakota. If you don’t have any connections to North Dakota, find a North Dakota resource useful for genealogy research to highlight and write about. This week’s prompt runs from 9/29/2013 – 10/5/2013. If you choose to follow along, I would appreciate a mention to the Hidden Genealogy Nuggets website.

I do not have any family connections to North Dakota, so I will highlight a resource instead.

The North Dakota GenWeb site seems to be a very good resource to start your search for your North Dakota ancestors. There are several online records which you can reach from this website including the 1885 territorial census. Some of these links will take you off the North Dakota website to another site. For example, when you do a search from the 1885 territorial census, it takes you to North Dakota State University Libraries page, where the search engine is located.

If you have any family connections to North Dakota, make sure to visit this valuable resource and one or more of the links below.

This is another one of those western states where I do not have any links to. This week, I’ve decided to highlight one of the Colorado Genealogical Links I found.

The Colorado State University can be proud of their digital collections. They have a variety of records which can be useful for those looking for their ancestors and for learning about how their ancestors lived while in Colorado. These include;

Since I do not have any family ties to the state of Nebraska which I’m aware of, this week I will highlight a genealogy resource which I believe will be helpful to those who do have ancestors in Nebraska.

The Nebraska State Historical Society has a number of searchable databases on it’s website which include;

Almost Wordless Wednesday: Cabinet Card of a Young Woman

cabinet card

Can you help identify this woman? I have a few questions about the photo.

  • What is the approximate date the photo was taken?
  • What is the approximate age of the woman in the photo?
  • What is the photographers name? I can easily read Oscar. Is the last name Dummar?
  • It looks like a real formal photograph. What might have been the occasion for the photo?

If you have any thoughts about this photo, I would love to hear from you.
